On a recent trip to the Piedmont in Italy, I bought a bottle of Hilberg Pasquero Vareij from a very small producer in the hills of Priocca, near Canale. This wine is a rare blend of Barbera and Brachetto, tank fermented, and never sees oak. Its bright fresh fruit takes center stage. I thought it would be fun to bring Ceri back a bottle and surprise her! Guess what? She already stocked it."
